Shameless Season 3, Episode 12, “Survival of the Fittest” Recap
I have to start off this recap by saying how great Kevin was in this episode. He did not have too big of a role in it, but the times he was involved he was money.
As for the rest of the episode, I thought it was a pretty good finally, but not great as there might have been some room for improvement. I guess I was hoping for a more powerful scene between Fiona and Frank as he was in the hospital. The scene definitely showed how much Frank has actually hurt Fiona and killed really any chance to be forgiven for all that he has done. In my opinion, it looked like Fiona had cared more about Jimmy leaving that Frank in the hospital almost dying. With everything going on with Frank it had me thinking where this show would go if he were to die. Now a lot of the storylines revolve around the kids, but without Frank I am not sure if the show would be as enjoyable. But if Frank is no longer going to be drinking that might have the same impact on the show as it would basically mean Frank will be completely different. With all of that, I am very interested to see where this show goes next.
It also looks like next season may have some of the Gallaghers scattered throughout the country and separated from each other. We have Ian going off to join the Army, Lip possibly moving on to MIT and who knows what will end up happening for Fiona. I really love the potential that this show has now that they may be moving on to different places as it could make for some moments where the Gallaghers will be outside their elements.
It also appeared as if a few other characters are moving on to a new place as Karen and Jody are moving away. It will be interesting to see if they ever come back, but I think the Karen storyline has been played out as much and this is their way of completely removing her from the show. We still do not know for sure what happened to Jimmy as I still believe that he is alive. I think that if they wanted to kill him off the show then they would have shown him being killed. It is more likely that he had to move back to Brazil to be with Estefania. I just am not sure if we will see him come back on the show again like last time. Can they really have that happen twice in this series?
I feel like this episode was more a preview of what we will see next season and not so much wrapping up this season. There is still the whole Lip and Mandy relationship where the door is definitely still open for them to get back together. It is also very clear that Mickey wanted to stop Ian from joining the Army and leaving. That was a good scene, but once again I thought there was an opportunity for some more emotion and it looked like Mandy agreed with me on that. I still do not believe that we have seen the last of their relationship either.
In the end, I feel like this was a great season and it left me really intrigued to see where this show is heading. I am definitely exctied about all of the different routes this show can go in and we will have to see how it all plays out.
