Vinny Ginardi: Two straight great episodes from The Newsroom, with this one doubling as perhaps the best of the entire series.
I only had one real complaint with this episode, so I’m going to get it out of the way now. It’s just way too convenient that Lisa went to high school with Casey Anthony. I mean, come on. It just felt a little too forced.
But other than that detail, this was a well-rounded episode. The humor was consistent throughout (especially Jim, he was on fire), the love
triangles squares whatever they are were presented realistically, and the suggested new debate format was entertaining and simultaneously thought provoking. Most importantly (to me at least), several storylines are carrying into the finale. Most of this first season featured episodes that were individual from one another, but the continuing narrative presented in these last few episodes has made the show a much better watch.
After a a decline in quality in the middle of this first season, it appears that The Newsroom is sprinting strong to the finish.
Mike Aurigemma: I agree that Lisa knowing Casey Anthony was really convenient and I think one negative about this show to me is that it does seem forced at times. There are moments where it seems like the show is trying to spell out the point they are trying to get. Like McKenzie talking about how she knows no one wants to report on the Casey Anthony story. It just seems like they think the viewers are not smart enough to understand and grasp what is going on.
Other than that side of things, I have definitely become a fan of this show and although the love storyline between so many of the characters can get boring at times it is a change of pace from the news reporting.
The fact that the show is trying to finally create storylines throughout a whole season is a big improvement. Not only do they have all the drama going on between the characters and their love lives, but more importantly they have Charlie and his source to still touch on, Will and his death threats and also his possibility of getting fired. This has kept me waiting for the next weeks episode and that is a necessity for me to continue to tune in.
