Assembling The Team: If Pro Athletes Made Up The Avengers
With the recent release of The Avengers (go see it), I think it’s important that we take a look at what athletes could have played the roles in this superhero blockbuster. Okay, maybe ‘important’ wasn’t the right word, but let’s have some fun!
Note: Black Widow is not included in this. When discussing potential look-alikes with fellow WaiverWire writers, Greg Kaplan made the point the Scarlett Johansson is basically incomparable. Point taken.
Loki (Tom Hiddleston)/Tim Lincecum
Credit for this to my friend Dave for pointing this one out during the movie last night. Though I wish he hadn’t. From that moment on I couldn’t figure out why or how Tim Lincecum had become so evil. Maybe that’s why he’s struggling this year. His mind is on other things, like controlling the universe.
Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner)/ Jake Peavy
I’m not convinced that Jake Peavy and Jeremy Renner aren’t actually the same person. Apparently I’m not the only one who thinks so (though I thought I was the first to notice and am a little bummed to find out I’m not)… Peavy and Joe Torre’s thoughts on it here.
Thor (Chris Hemsworth)/ Clay Matthews
Credit here goes to fellow WaiverWire writer Joe Binckes. Is there a better fit for Thor than Clay Matthews? Would you be surprised to learn that Matthews actually did all of Hemsworth’s stunts? Me neither.
Captain America (Chris Evans)/ Joe Mauer
Maybe the hair isn’t perfect for this one (though it’s not bad either), but that’s nothing a little Head and Shoulders shampoo couldn’t fix, right Joe?
Dr. Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo)/ Matt Leinart
What’s most similar between Leinart and Banner? The crowd always wants to see the other guy.
The Hulk/ Kevin Garnett
Credit to Binckes again for finding both Hulk look-alikes. Anyway, these two are both green (we will credit the Celtics jersey here) and not afraid to scream at any point of an encounter. A perfect match.
Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.)/ Rick Pitino
Okay, Pitino isn’t exactly an athlete, but we’re counting it. If they are thinking of doing any Lost-style fast forwards in Iron Man 3, Pitino has to be their man.
